The Best Way to Fly Economy to Hawaii

A lot of different aspects can make or break an economy flight experience. A safe and on-time flight should always be number one, but after that most people look to the food, the service, the price, and most importantly — the seat.

The Hawaiian Airlines Airbus A330 has an exclusive economy mini-cabin at the front of the plane, and I’m here to proclaim it’s the best way to fly economy to Hawaii.

The Hawaiian Airlines A330 Mini-Cabin

Hawaiian uses the A330 to fly to Honolulu from as far away as Orlando and Newark. Just behind the three rows of First Class, and separated by a bulkhead, you’ll find just two rows of Hawaiian’s ‘Extra Comfort’ Economy seats.

Just like the rest of the economy cabin, the seats are laid out in a 2-4-2 configuration with only one row of seats on either side of the plane and two rows of seats in the middle. The seats have a fantastic 36” of legroom — five more inches than standard economy on most US airplanes.

Upholstered in the traditional Hawaiian Airlines Blue and Brown colors, each seat comes with its own TV screen for inflight entertainment and an adjustable headrest.

The small cabin with a wall in front and galley behind makes you feel like you have your own private plane with plenty of space for the flight halfway across the Pacific.

The seats on the left and right side of the plane are perfect for the traveling couple with only 2 instead of 3 seats (as is the case on many larger US aircraft), a window view, your own TVs, and direct access to the galley and bathrooms 3 steps away.

Hawaiian Extra Comfort

In addition to the great seats available in the mini-cabin, Hawaiian Extra Comfort tickets also include the following benefits:

  • Zone 3 priority boarding

  • Priority security line (available in Austin, Honolulu, Las Vegas, New York, Oakland, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, and San Jose)

  • Power outlets and USB ports at each seat

  • Non-alcoholic beverages and snacks

  • Complimentary meals at mealtime (no meals served on flights departing after 8 PM)

  • HawaiianMiles members earn one mile for every mile flown

How to Book

Booking a seat in the mini-cabin is easy and directly done on the Hawaiian Airlines website. Search for the route you want to fly and when the results appear, click the “flight details” arrow to make sure the flight you choose is operated by an Airbus A330.

After you select the flights you want and ensure it's operated by an A330, you’ll input your personal information and then get to the seat selection screen of the booking process. All you need to do is pick the seat you want in the mini-cabin, pay, and your practically private economy flying experience to Hawaii is booked.

The price of $456 round-trip for the specific dates I chose is not bad at all and well worth the flying experience the mini-cabin provides.

Bottom Line

The Hawaiian Airlines A330 mini-cabin at the front of the plane is the best economy experience you can have for the hop to island paradise. The price is right, the privacy is perfect and the seats are spacious with their own TVs, power, and added perks of Extra Comfort. If you’re looking to travel to Hawaii in style but don’t want to splurge on a First Class seat, this is certainly the way to go.
