Holiday Tipping Guide

If you are overwhelmed by the holiday rush, you are not alone. Holiday travel and gift shopping are in full swing and can easily strain budgets. On top of those expenses, it’s also time to tip those in your life that help you throughout the year. Holiday tipping is a great way to show your appreciation for those who make your life a little easier.

Start with making a list and setting a budget, suggests Fidelity. This will help you figure out how much you can afford to tip without spending outside of your means.

Some people on your list might include those who provide you with a service, like a dog walker or hairstylist. And if you live in a doorman building, you’ll want to consider tipping your building staff.

If you’re unsure of who else to show some extra love to this year this guide will help you decide how much you should give and to whom.

Super or Property manager

$150 to $300, depending on how responsive and helpful your super has been.

Doorman or concierge

$75 to $200 each. If there's only one, something higher might be appropriate (as much as $150 or $200), especially if they're friendly and helpful, or if you’re in a luxury building.

Porters, handymen, or building staff

$25 to $50 each. Check with your building association if there is a pool of holiday tips that all employees share.

Garage attendant

$25 - $75

Dry cleaner

Drop off a box of donuts or chocolates for the whole staff to enjoy.

Dog walker

One week's pay and/or a gift. A scarf or beanie is thoughtful.

Hairstylist/manicurist/barber

The cost of one visit, or a gift of equivalent worth.

Personal trainer

Up to one session's fee or a gift card for a massage.

Housekeeper

If someone cleans your house once or twice a month, consider tipping them the amount of one service.

Barista or Bartender

$20 each. If you have a favorite barista or bartender, show them a little extra love for remembering (and perfecting) your order.

Can't afford a tip this year?

Remember that tipping is personal and totally up to you. If your finances and holiday budget are tight this year, there are other ways to show your gratitude, like baking something and including a thoughtful note or card. The important thing is that you are acknowledging these individuals for their services throughout the year.
